St. Martin de Porres is known for his tender care of the sick & for his spectacular cures. Prior to him, it was stipulated that no black person may receive the holy habit or profession as a Dominican brother. His good works were so recognized that he became the first black to receive the Dominican habit. He is commonly pictured with a broom which reminds us that he is also the patron saint of menial tasks.
